Sunday, Feb 5th @ 2pm
The American Legion Post 129 will honor the sacrifice in a Four Chaplains Memorial Service observed by veterans nationwide. A full slate of events and dignitaries ranging up to U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R, Jacksonville) will be on hand to take part in the memorial service that begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5.

The event is to commemorate four military chaplains who were on the U.S. military ship Dorchester that was sunk on Feb. 3, 1943 which claimed most of the 902 lives on board. There were only 230 survivors when the ship was attacked and went down off the coast of Greenland.

The four chaplains on board the ship gave their life jackets to four other American soldiers and in doing so, they sacrificed their own lives. The four clergymen were last seen on the deck of the ship linking arms while praying as the ship went down.

Prior to the formal event’s beginning on Feb. 5, American Legion (motorcycle) Riders along with an Atlantic Beach police escort will begin forming at 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Ocean/Beaches Post 129, 1151 South Fourth St., Jacksonville Beach. Then a procession will begin on local Beaches roads leading to the Beaches Veterans Memorial Park on Mayport Road at Atlantic Boulevard in Atlantic Beach.
